Felt-tip pen and ink on paper, 48”× 69”, 2024.

The main idea for this drawing is to relinquish subjective intentionality in a drawing process. No traditional compositional considerations were followed. Instead, it lets the process drive itself. It starts with drawing a short stubby vertical line on the upper left edge of the paper (as far as the wrist can go without lifting). Then it’s duplicated in a second line, overlapping the first slightly, which results in a darker thin line where they overlap. Accidental changes are accepted and also duplicated. This gesture repeats till it reaches the right edge. Then it starts again in the next row, beginning by copying the first line in the previous row. Etc. The ink in the pen eventually starts to run out, naturally resulting in different shades. When the ink completely runs out,  a new pen is used. The end result has a palpable rhythm to it, although completely unplanned and unplannable.

This work represents a main interest of my recent art practice that explores a way of making art that incorporates the influence of Zen, in particular the practice of being present through meditation.
